Here are the ABC’s

All family members above the age of two should be consuming a heart-healthy diet to help maintain healthy levels of cholesterol. Elevated cholesterol levels are a key risk factor for the development of heart disease, which research has shown can begin in childhood.

Butter has cholesterol. Margarine spreads don’t. Butter also has lots of saturated fat. Margarine spreads have much less saturated fat. As part of a heart-healthy diet that is low in total fat, saturated fat and trans fat, soft or liquid margarine spreads, especially those with no trans fat, are the tablespreads recommended for use in place of butter.

Choose a margarine spread that has no trans fat, 0-2 grams saturated fat and no cholesterol per serving. Choices that are consistent with healthy eating guidelines for heart health include I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter® soft, squeeze and spray varieties with no trans fat, no trans fat varieties of Shedd’s Spread Country Crock® and Promise® Buttery Spreads. (Note: These margarine spreads have no trans fat, 0-2 grams saturated fat and no cholesterol per serving. Check the Nutrition Facts panel for detailed information.)

These ABC’s are an oversimplification of why families should use a margarine spread instead of butter. However these ABC’s capture the basics behind recommendations made by leading heart-health organizations after years of reviewing scientific studies.
